National parks in the vicinity of Zadar

National Parks

Zadar is surrounded with 5 National Parks: Paklenica, Kornati, Plitvice Lakes, Krka waterfalls and North Velebit.

You'll spend something between half an hour and two hours (depends on the destination you choose), by car or by boat to reach one of this wonderful places.

Nature parks

There are also three nature parks in the Zadar region:

  • Telašica (one of the biggest bays on Dugi otok),
  • Lake Vrana(the largest natural lake in Croatia) and
  • the Velebit Mountain (rocks Tulove grede and Anica kuk, cave Manita pec).

Lake Vrana Nature Park

Lake Vrana Nature Park, a nature phenomenon is situated between the two historically interesting and rich cities of Zadar and Šibenik.

It is the biggest natural lake in Croatia and one of the rare, almost intact natural habitats of waterfowls with sources of drinking water.

According to its position and characteristics, the nature park and Lake Vrana are particularly specific not only in Croatia, but in the European area.

The dominant characteristic of the park is that it has been declared and inserted in the list of important ornithological areas in Europe (Important Bird Areas in Europe).

Velebit Mountain

As a habitat for a large number of floral endemic species and flora and fauna relicts, Velebit was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO in 1978.

The hinterland of the Zadar region is famous for the canyons of the Zrmanja and Krupa rivers. The wilderness of their stone splendor presents a beautiful part of Zadar hinterland, especially around the Karin Sea and the Novigrad Sea where rivers literally mingle with the Adriatic Sea.

Nature Park Telašćica

Among the particularly valuable regions of the Republic of Croatia, Telašćica holds a particular place and it is the only nature park on sea.

Its natural geographical features, flora and fauna, geomorphological entity, sea, submarine world and landscape represent a naturally well-situated unity on the land and sea of the last maritime kilometers of the Republic of Croatia state territory.

A refuge for donkeys, karst fields and olive groves, Roman villas, coves, lakes, lighthouses... you can see all of these in Telašćica.
