Apoxyomenos in Zadar - the bigest Zadar cultural event of the year
"The Croatian Apoxyomenos"
Apoxyomenos in Zadar - the bigest Zadar cultural event of the year.
Exhibition "THE CROATIAN APOXYOMENOS" in MUSEUM OF ANCIENT GLASS ZADAR is dedicated to a bronze statue from Classical Antiquity representing a young athlete - Apoxiomenos.
The exhibition is open from march 30th till september 30th 2010.
The ancient bronze statue Apoxyomenos, the figure of a young athlete (h. 192 cm), was found in 1996 by a Belgian tourist, M. René Wouters, under the sea off the little island of Vele Orjule, near Lošinj in Croatia. The statue was lying on a sandy seabed, stuck between two rocks, at a depth of approximately 45 m.
About preparation of the statue
In 1998, this find, of incalculable value, was reported to the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia.
The Ministry of Culture took over the coordination of the project, which envisaged systematic submarine archaeological exploration, the raising of the statue and its conservation-restoration.
The raising action involved experts from the Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Museum in Zadar, as well as Special Police and professional divers.
The statute was finally brought to the surface on April 27 ( which is, by the way, my birthday, so we can celebrate together), 1999, and during June that year, extensive underwater investigations at the site were carried out in quest of any other valuable finds there might be.
After seven years of extremely extensive conservation and restoration operations,Apoxyomenos is ready to be presented to the public.
The Croatian Apoxyomenos, then, is an athlete who has just completed his bout or his exercise and is shown at a moment of relaxation when he is totally intent on cleaning his body.
The Academicians date this type of statue to about the middle of the 4th century BC and concludes that the statue from the seabed of Vele Orjule is most likely a Hellenistic copy of the 1st-2nd century BC.
I was really impressed. The statue is great, especially when you know how much time is spent under the sea.Conservators and restorers did a huge job. When you see photos taken before restoration, it is clear why it took seven years. And the exhibition is in
MUSEUM OF ANCIENT GLASS ZADAR
which is my favorite.
So, if you visit Zadar, you can do two "must to" things at once:
- see the world unique exhibition of ancient glass
- and see Apoxyomenos in Zadar
